Southbound

Today I am heading south. I am leaving Orlando behind me, go through Clermont, Lakeland and Winter Haven and will end up in Bonita Springs for the night, before crossing the Everglades from west to east to Miami for the final days of my vacation. Vandaag ga ik naar het zuiden. Ik laat Orlando achter mij en ga door Clermont, Lakeland en Winter Haven en eindig in Bonita Springs voor de nacht, voordat ik de Everglades doorkruis van west naar oost naar Miami voor de laatste dagen van mijn vakantie.

I got up as usual in my hotel room. I repacked all my things yesterday to see if it would all fit in my suitcases and would stay withing the airline limits. So far so good, even with my purchases planned today I will remain within the limits. I check out at the hotel and walk to my rental car which will take me to Clermont for breakfast today.

Around 11 AM I arrive at the Citrus tower in Clermont again, this time for my breakfast at Uncle Kenny’s. Today I have the pleasure to meet Kenny and he shows me his renovated room, where he has displayed a couple of smokers. In here he will hold cooking classes and he will sell off smokers as well. He also has displayed many of his trophies he has won over the years. I also see the he has s nice display with not only his sauces and rubs, but also of fierce competitor bbq teams, like Hot Wachula’s and others. We talked a bit about the contests before my breakfast is served.

Today I have the pulled pork egg rolls for breakfast. These are delicious and you can live all day on a pair of these egg rolls. They are filled with pulled pork and cole slaw and are absolutely delicious. During my breakfast we talk a bit more about FBA and KCBS contests. I finish off my breakfast and get a refill on my sweet tea and am back on the road.

Next stop on my travel today is Lakeland. In Lakeland I will pay a short visit to Whiskey Bent. A store where you can buy smokers and cookers, accessoires and also sauces and rubs. I do not need anything, but end up buying a t-shirt and some 3eyz rub. This rub is marvellous on ribs. I briefly talk to the seller and pay for my things and off I go again.

On to the next stop, not too far from Lakeland, Winter Haven. I only have to pick up a bit of sauce there. Rub Bagby of Swamp Boys made his own sauce and Mac’s is selling it in the store. You can also find Byron Chism’s Butt Rub in the store as well as Everglades seasoning. Besides that the store is filled with meat, good meat, good prices. A genuine good meat and produce store run by locals.

I pick up two large pints of Original sauce and move on southbound to Bonita Springs. It’s a long drive south. I skipped the highway and took other roads to reach my destination. Before going to the hotel, I first go to the beach to watch the sun set. It takes just a couple of minutes to see the sun disappear in the distance. After the sun has set, I drive to the Holiday Inn Express and check in.

I take my luggage to my room and leave for dinner. Tonight no bbq as there are not many bbq restaurants in this area, and the one I found already closed, so today I visit a local restaurant called Daniela’s. Today something completely different. I take a gulasy soup as starter and take stuffed pepper as main dish. After I have finished both, I am full and have no room left for dessert. Both dishes were very good. They do both taste more european than american.

After that I head back to the hotel and go finish up for the day. Tomorrow another long day on the road.

Ik sta op zoals gebruikelijk in mijn hotel kamer. Ik heb gisteren alles herpakt in de koffers om te zoen of alles zou passen en binnen de limieten van de vliegtuigmaatschappij zou blijven. Zelfs met de aankopen die ik vandaag gepland heb, blijf ik binnen de limieten. Ik check uit in het hotel en loop naar mijn huurauto die mij naar Clermont zal brengen voor mijn ontbijt.

Rond 11:00 uur arriveer ik bij de Citrus tower in Clermont, deze keer voor mijn ontbijt bij Uncle Kenny’s. Vandaag heb ik het genoegen Kenny te ontmoeten en hij laat mij zijn gerenoveerde kamer zien, waar hij een aantal smokers heeft opgesteld. Hier zal hij kook lessen geven en smokers verkopen. Hij heeft er ook een flink aantal trofeeën tentoongesteld die hij in de loop der jaren gewonnen heeft. Ik zie dat hij ook een display heeft met niet alleen zijn sauzen en rubs, maar ook die van andere sterke bbq teams, waaronder Hot Wachula’s. We praten wat over de wedstrijden voordat mijn ontbijt wordt opgediend.

Vandaag heb ik pulled pork loempia’s als ontbijt. Deze zijn heerlijk en je kunt er de hele dag op leven op deze loempia’s. Ze zijn gevuld met pulled pork en coleslaw en zijn absoluut heerlijk. Tijdens mijn ontbijt praten we nog wat meer over de FBA en KCBS wedstrijden. Ik eet mijn ontbijt op en krijg nog een refill van mijn ice tea en ik ga de weg weer op.

Volgende stop op mijn reis is Lakeland. In Lakeland breng ik een kort bezoek aan Whiskey Bent. Een winkel waar je smokers en grills en accessoires kunt kopen en ook sauzen en rubs. Ik heb eigenlijk niets nodig, maar koop een t-shirt en wat 3eyz rubs. Deze rub is heerlijk op ribben. Ik praat nog kort met de verkoper en betaal mijn spullen en ga weer door.

Op naar de volgende stop, niet ver van Lakeland, Winter Haven. Ik hoef hier alleen wat saus op te halen. Rub Bagby van Swamp Boys maakt zijn eigen saus en die wordt hier verkocht. Je kunt hier ook Byron Chism’s Butt Rub kopen en ook Everglades seasoning. Naast dat is de winkel gevuld met vlees, goed vlees, goede prijzen. Een echt goede vlees en groente winkel, gerund door lokale mensen.

Ik haal twee grote potten saus en ga zuidwaarts naar Bonita Springs. Een lange rit. Ik vermijd de snelweg en neem andere wegen om mijn doel te bereiken. Voordat ik naar het hotel ga, ga ik eerst naar het strand om de zonsondergang te zien. Het duurt maar een paar minuten voordat om de zon onder te zien gaan in de verte. Als de zon onder is gegaan, ga ik naar Holiday Inn Express en check in.

Ik breng mijn bagage naar mijn kamer en vertrek voor avondeten. Vandaag geen bbq, omdat er niet veel bbq restaurants in de omgeving zijn en degene die ik gevonden had al gesloten is. Vandaag ga ik naar een lokaal restaurant, Daniela’s genaamd. Vandaag iets geheel anders. Ik neem een gulasy soep en een gevulde paprika. Nadat ik beide heb opgegeten is er geen ruimte meer voor een toetje. Beide gerechten waren erg goed. Ze smaken meer europees dan amerikaans.

Daarna ben ik weer terug gegaan naar het hotel om de dag af te sluiten. Morgen wederom een lange dag op de weg.

Southbound

Long trip to SeaWorld

Today I travel from Perry via Homosassa to Orlando. A long trip which takes a couple of hours. On my way I will stop at Homosassa at a National Park and will also drive through Clermont for a bite to eat. Tonight I will be going to SeaWorld. Vandaag rij ik van Perry via Homosassa naar Orlando. Een lange rit die enkele uren gaat duren. Onderweg stop ik in Homosassa bij een Nationaal Park en rij ook door Clermont voor een hap te eten. Vanavond ga ik naar SeaWorld.

But first I have to check out at the Royal Inn Hotel in Perry. As said a nice and clean hotel which is being operated by a nice family from Hyderabad India. We had a short conversation about why I was in Perry and what I thought of the room. After that I asked him why there is no place open for breakfast on Sunday. Perry is a small town and they either are in church or do not believe in business on Sunday.

I thank him for the stay, pack my things and set my navigation to Homosassa. I take the 19 south and this is a long and boring road to travel. There is not much to see or to do on this trip to Homosassa and after a couple of hours I arrive at the Homosassa Springs National Wildlife State Park. From there I take a boat to the entrance and walk around in the park.

During my visit I have a Facetime session with my parents, wife and daughter in The Netherlands. They get to see a bit of the park as I walk along. The park has animals which they treat and if they are fit enough, will be set free again. There are a couple of animals that will never be set free again as they have been too long in the park and would not survive in the wilderness.

After a couple of hours, I take the tram back to the parking lot and move on towards Clermont. If I take the quick road or the scenic road does not really make a difference in time, so I take the scenic road and arrive in Clermont at the Citrus Tower about 1,5 Hours later. Under the Citrus Tower is Uncle Kenny’s BBQ restaurant.

I have been here before a couple of times and the food was always good, so I would go for it again. I wanted to taste the meat candy, the brisket burnt ends, but unfortunately they were already sold out. I then took a combo of chicken, pork and ribs with a side of salad and a side of homemade potato chips. The food was again very good. Ribs were fall-off-the-bone so could have been cooked a bit shorter for me, but taste was excellent. Pork and chicken were also very good, as well as the sides. Too bad I missed Kenny himself, as he was out with his family getting a Christmas Tree.

After the meal, I moved to Orlando to check in at the hotel and quickly put my stuff in my room for the night and left to go to SeaWorld. SeaWorld is having a Chrismas Celebration today and is open until 9 PM instead of 6 PM. As I do not take the rides, I am here for the shows. As soon as I arrive I pick up a map and walk towards the stadiums. I hear that the O Wondrous  Night had reached capacity, so I headed to Shamu Stadium for a Shamu Christmas Miracles show.

They have not changed a lot since last year, but the show is better than last year and music and show fit better than last year. After the Shamu Christmas Miracles Show, I headed over to the Polar Express. I took the ride, which is not too scary and too bumpy. At the end you get to see some animals and even get to see Santa. From there I went over to see the O Wondrous Night show, the second show of the night.

This show was not full yet, so I managed to get in. There were a lot of people. I had a seat in the obstructed view area and did not see the whole 100% of the stage, but sat a bit on the side. The show is very well arranged and is fun to watch. It takes about half an hour and tells the story about the birth of Christ in a funny way.

After that show, I went back to Shamu Stadium again, to see the Shamu show once more. The show was the same as the earlier show, so no surprises there. People in the soak zone were getting soaked. From there quickly over to the next show, the Winter Wonderland On Ice, an ice skating show. Right after the ice skating show is the Holiday Reflections Fireworks show. This show was better than last year. They have spent some time getting the fireworks in synch with the music. Also it looked to me as if they had more fireworks than last year.

After the fireworks it was time to leave SeaWorld, as it closes right after the fireworks display. I headed back to the hotel and sorted out some pictures and wrote the blog. Tomorrow is another shopping day, so probably not so much to talk about.

Maar ik moet vandaag eerst uitchecken uit het Royal Inn hotel in Perry. Zoals ik zei is het een leuk en schoon hotel welke gerund wordt door een familie uit Hyderabad, India. We hebben kort gesproken over de reden waarom ik in Perry was en wat ik van de kamer vond. Daarna heb ik hem gevraagd waarom er geen ontbijt te krijgen is in Perry op zondag. Perry is een kleine plaats en de mensen zijn ofwel in de kerk of geloven niet in werk op zondag.

Ik bedank hem voor mijn verblijf, pak mijn spullen en zet de navigatie op Homosassa. Ik neem de 19 naar het zuiden. Dit is een lange en saaie rit. Er is niet veel te zien of te doen onderweg naar Homosassa en na een paar uur kom ik aan in Homosassa bij het Homosassa Springs National Wildlife State Park. Vanuit hier neem ik een boot naar de ingang en loop door het park.

Gedurende mijn verblijf Facetime ik met mijn ouders, Willy en dochter in Nederland. Zij kunnen met mij meekijken in het park terwijl ik rondloop. In het park zijn dieren, die daar verblijven totdat ze voldoende hersteld zijn om weer terug de wildernis in te gaan. Een aantal dieren zullen niet meer de wildernis ingaan, omdat ze daar niet meer zouden kunnen overleven.

Na een paar uur, neem ik de tram terug richting parkeerplaats en ga verder richting Clermont. Of ik de snelle of de toeristische route maakt in tijd niet veel uit, dus ik neem de touristische route en arriveer ongeveer 1,5 uur later bij de Citrus Tower in Clermont. Onder de Citrus Tower zit Uncle Kenny’s BBQ restaurant.

Ik ben hier al een aantal keren eerder geweest en het eten was altijd goed, dus ik ga er weer voor. Ik wilde graag meat candy, brisket burnt ends, maar die waren helaas al uitverkocht. Ik koos voor een combo van kip, varken en ribs met een salade en huisgemaakte chips. Het eten was wederom erg goed. Ribs waren fall-off-the-bone dus hadden voor mij iets korter gekookt/gerookt mogen worden, maar het smaakte voortreffelijk. Varken en kip waren ook erg goed, net als de bijgerechten. Helaas heb ik Kenny zelf niet ontmoet, want die was met zijn familie een kerstboom aan het uitzoeken.

Na het eten ben ik doorgereden naar Orlando om in te checken in het hotel en heb snel de spullen naar mijn kamer gebracht en ben naar SeaWorld vertrokken. SeaWorld heeft vandaag een Christmas Celebration en is tot 21:00 uur open in plaats van tot 18:00 uur. Aangezien ik geen attracties in ga, kom ik voor de shows. Zodra ik binnen ben pak ik een kaart en loop richting de stadions. Ik hoor dat O Wondrous Night haar capaciteit bereikt heeft, dus loop ik door naar het Shamu Stadion voor de Shamu Christmas Miracles show.

Ze hebben niet veel aan de show veranderd sinds vorig jaar, maar de show is wel beter dan vorig jaar en de muziek en show zijn beter op mekaar aangesloten. Na de Shamu Chrismas Miracles show ga ik naar de Polar Express. Ik heb de rit genomen en die is niet eng of gevaarlijk. Aan het eind krijg je nog wat dieren te zien en kun je Santa zien. Van daaruit ben ik doorgelopen naar de tweede O Wondrous Night show.

Deze show was nog niet vol, dus ik kon nog naar binnen. Er waren veel mensen. Ik had een plek in de beperkt zicht zone en kon niet de volle 100% van het podium zien. De show is goed opgezet en is leuk om naar te kijken. Het duurt ongeveer een half uur en vertelt het verhaal over de geboorte van Christus op een leuke manier.

Na deze show ben ik weer terug gegaan naar het Shamu Stadion om de Shamu show nog een keer te zien. De show was hetzelfde als eerder op de avond, dus geen verassingen. Mensen die in de soak zone zaten, werden ook nat. Van daaruit snel door naar de volgende show, de Winter Wonderland on Ice show. Een ijs schaats show. Meteen na die show is de Holiday Reflections Vuurwerk show. De show is beter dan vorig jaar. Ze hebben wat tijd erin gestopt en de muzien en het vuurwerk zijn beter op mekaar afgestemd. Ook lijkt het erop alsof ze meer vuurwerk hebben dan vorig jaar.

Na het vuurwerk is het tijd om SeaWorld te verlaten, aangezien het park sluit na het vuurwerk. Ik ga terug naar het hotel, zoek wat foto’s uit en schrijf dit blog. Morgen is een dag om te winkelen, dus waarschijnlijk niet zoveel om over te schrijven.
