Check in at the World Food Championship

Cookers at Celebration

Today it’s Check-In Day at the World Food Championship. At least that’s what I thought reading through my emails. So the day started off as usual, with selecting some photos, checking emails and creating a daily post for my blog to keep everybody updated on my whereabouts. We went to Waffle House, Celebration, some malls and stores before having dinner at Longhorn and heading back to the rental home.

We were very warmly welcomed at Waffle House for our late breakfast. Some people eat breakfast as soon as they step out of bed, some wait for a couple of hours. I am one of the latter persons and do not eat breakfast first thing after getting up. The breakfast was very good and the personnel was very nice. It was fun eating breakfast at this place.

From there we headed for Celebration, where a great part of the World Food Championship is being held. I thought I needed to check in there as I am volunteering, table captaining and judging. It took a little while to find a parking spot, since Celebration is not very big and are not used to having so many people visiting I guess. After looking around the area a bit, I went to the volunteering check-in, but there I noticed that this is for a different kind of volunteers. I did not have to check in at this time, so we left to head over to the Westgate Resort & Spa, where the check-in for BBQ teams is located.

There we met the wonderful people of the KCBS International Outreach team, Debby and Bill Gage and Mariah and Wayne Lohman. Also while checking in, we met Clint and Eva from the Czech Republic who are also competing. After all the form filling and photography we were ready and on our way out we met the very nice Big Papa’s, Dana Hillis.

From there we went on a shopping tour, which started at the Vineland Premium Outlet Mall, probably the biggest outlet mall in Orlando. After a while we had a snack and shopped a bit more before leaving this mall for the Mall at Millenia, the luxury mall of Orlando. There we also shopped for a while checking out stores and from there we headed over to Dick’s Sporting Goods and ended up at The Home Depot.

By the time we left The Home Depot we were getting a bit hungry again, so we decided to go for steak this time. On our way back to the rental home we stopped at Longhorn. We had some great steaks (yes with vegetables) and after this great meal we went back to the house and called it a night.

Shopping Day

As already stated yesterday, today will be a shopping day. I will go and drive around and do some shopping working away the shopping list. Not all on the list could be found, so I have to come back again to find the missing items on a future vacation. Zoals ik gisteren al aangaf, is vandaag een shopping dag. Ik ga rondrijden en shoppen, om de dingen van de boodschappenlijst af te werken. Niet alles op de lijst kan ik vinden, dus ik moet een keer terugkomen om de ontbrekende dingen te vinden tijdens een toekomstige vakantie.

Actually there is not very much more to say on today’s adventures. I started off eating breakfast at First Watch. A great place with healthy food. I took Eggs Benedict (again) and also had some fresh fruit. After having had Eggs Benedict 3 times this vacation I can tell that the best was served by Carol’s Place. First Watch makes a good second.

After breakfast I went to WalMart where I spent quite some time finding things on my list, but eventually did not find any thing at all and left the store empty handed. From there I drove over to Walgreens to get some items for Willy. I found a few things and paid for the items.

Then I went a bit touring and watched a fort for a while. Unfortunately most of the fort was closed on Monday, so I could not see everything and after a while I drove around again and ended up at the Premium Outlet Vineland in Orlando. This is one of the biggest outlet malls in Orlando. I checked out a few stores to see if I could find any clothes. I did not find much, but then again I already have bought some things.

After I left the Premium Outlet, I went to get some dinner at Bubbalou’s Bodacious BBQ Restaurant at the first location they ever opened, Winter Park. I was a bit late, so did not have the choice of everything. I took brisket and pulled pork. Both were delicious. As side orders I had coleslaw, jalapeno cheese grits and collard greens. The collard greens were ok, the coleslaw was good and the grits are great.

After having finished my meal I went to Toys R Us near the Millenia Mall and also went to Dick’s Sporting Goods. I managed to pick up some items on the list at  Toys R Us and from there went to my hotel, the Rosen Centre on International Drive.

Tomorrow I will be leaving Orlando and will be heading south. Via Lakeland and Winter Haven, I will end up in Bonita Springs for a night, after which I will cross the Everglades to Miami.

Eigenlijk valt er niet veel meer te vertellen over de avonturen van vandaag. Ik begon vandaag met ontbijt bij First Watch. Een prima plek met gezond eten. Ik had Eggs Benedict (alweer) en wat vers fruit. Na 3 keer Eggs Benedict gegeten te hebben deze vakantie, kan ik zeggen dat de beste can Carol’s Place was. First Watch is een goede tweede.

Na het ontbijt ben ik naar WalMart gegaan en heb daar flink wat tijd doorgebracht op zoek naar dingen van het boodschappenlijstje, maar heb er uiteindelijk niets gevonden en ben met lege handen vertrokken. Van daaruit ben ik doorgereden naar Walgreens, waar ik wat dingen voor Willy heb gevonden en betaald.

Toen ben ik een beetje gaan touren en heb een fort bezocht. Helaas was het grootste gedeelte van het fort gesloten op maandag, dus kon ik niet alles zien en ben ik na een tijdje weer rond gaan rijden en uiteindelijk bij de Premium Outlet Vineland in Orlando beland. Dit is een van de grootste outlet malls in Orlando. Ik bekijk wat winkels en kijk of ik wat kleren kan vinden. Ik vind niet veel, maar ik heb tijdens deze vakantie al wat dingen gekocht.

Als ik de Premium Outlet verlaat, ga ik naar Bubbalou’s Bodacious BBQ restaurant om wat te eten bij hun eerste restaurant die ze ooit geopend hebben, Winter Park. Ik was wat aan de late kant en kon niet uit alles meer kiezen. Ik heb brisket en pulled pork genomen. Beide waren heerlijk. Als bijgerechten had ik coleslaw, jalapeno cheese grits (een soort griesmeel met kaas en jalapeno pepers) en collard greens (een soort kool/spinazie achtig, niet in nederland te krijgen). De collard greens waren ok, de coleslaw was goed en de griesmeel was lekker.

Nadat ik klaar was met mijn eten, ben ik naar Toys R Us geweest bij de Millenia Mall en daarna ook nog bij Dick’s Sporting Goods. Ik heb nog wat dingen van het lijstje kunnen vinden bij Toys R Us en ben daarna naar mijn hotel gegaan, het Rosen Centre aan de International Drive.

Morgen ga ik Orlando verlaten en ga zuidwaarts. Via Lakeland en Winter Haven, zal ik uitkomen in Bonita Springs voor de nacht, waarna ik de Everglades zal doorkruisen richting Miami.
