Goodbye Miami

Today an end comes to my 2 weeks trip through Florida. I will be going home this evening.There is nothing left but a little drive from the hotel, through Miami to Miami International Airport and from there take the plane to Brussels where my loved ones will be picking me up to go home. Vandaag komt een eind aan mijn 2 weken durende rit door Florida. Er rest niets meer dan een kleine rit vanaf het hotel, door Miami naar Miami International Airport en van daaruit een vliegtuig te nemen naar Brussel, waar mijn lieverds mij ophalen om naar huis te gaan.

It has been a great vacation and I will certainly come back again. I have travelled a lot and have seen a lot. I have met great people during this vacation and have seen many things I have never seen before, and some I have seen before.

Today I left the hotel late, as I have to be at the airport around 3 PM for check in. Since there is nothing left on my schedule and I do not want to be late at the airport I decide to take a trip through Ocean Drive before going to the airport. I slowly drive towards Miami Beach, as there has been an accident and this delays traffic a lot.

I drive over Ocean Drive northbound and from there take a so called scenic route towards Miami International Airport. On my way I see a lot of nice buildings, but also see a lot of empty abandoned buildings. I have seen a lot of good things during my stay in Florida but in Miami I have also seen a lot of poverty and Miami is also the only place during my stay where I have seen many homeless people.

When I arrive at the Rental Return at the airport it is close to 2 PM, so I am early. I leave the car at Alamo. I have travelled 1698 miles these 13 days. I have made no additional costs and will only be charged for those days. From there I take the monorail to the airport and look for the place to leave my luggage. At the Jetairfly counter it says that check-in will start at 2:40 PM, but it actually starts a bit after 3 PM.

The first delay. Then when I have checked in my luggage I get to hear that the flight has been delayed and will not depart at 6 PM, but at 8:45 PM. The second delay. I then have a lot of extra time to spend so I walk outside and sit there for a while. Then I check out all the shops, but do not find anything I need, so go through customs and sit and wait. Here I see that the departure time has changed to 9 PM, the third delay. This also means that the expected arrival time at Brussels has changed. Instead of arriving at 9:20 AM I will probably be there at 12:50 PM. At least there is some good news here. My wife and daughter get to sleep a bit longer. I myself will now go and grab a bite to eat and wait for the plane to arrive.

Het was een geweldige vakantie en ik zal zeker terugkomen. Ik heb veel gereisd en veel gezien. Ik heb leuke mensen ontmoet tijdens deze vakantie en heb veel dingen gezien die ik niet eerder gezien heb, en een paar die ik wel eerder gezien heb.

Vandaag vertrek ik laat uit het hotel, omdat ik rond 15:00 uur op het vliegveld moet zijn voor het inchecken. Aangezien er niets meer op mijn programma staat en ik niet te laat op het vliegveld wil komen, besluit ik om een rit over Ocean Drive te nemen voordat ik naar het vliegveld ga. Ik rij langzaam richting Miami Beach, omdat er een ongeluk is en dit het verkeer vertraagt. 

Ik rij over Ocean Drive naar het noorden en van daaruit rij ik een zogenoemde toeristische route  naar Miami International Airport. Onderweg zie ik een hoop mooie gebouwen, maar ook een hoop lege verlaten gebouwen. Ik heb een hoop goede dingen gezien tijdens mijn verblijf in Florida, maar ik Miami heb ik ook veel armoede gezien en tevens heb ik alleen in Miami zoveel thuisloze mensen gezien.

Als ik bij de Rental Return aankom bij het vliegveld is het rond 14:00 uur, dus ik ben vroeg. Ik laat de auto achter bij Alamo. Ik heb 2733 km gereden in 13 dagen. Ik heb geen extra kosten en er worden alleen 13 dagen huur in rekening gebracht. Van daaruit neem ik de monorail naar het vliegveld en zoek voor de plek waar ik mijn bagage kan achterlaten. Bij de Jetairfly counter staat dat ze om 14:40 uur beginnen met inchecken, maar het begint iets later dan 15:00 uur.

De eerste vertraging. Als ik dan mijn bagage ingechecked heb, krijg ik te horen dat de vlucht vertraagd is en dat hij niet om 18:00 uur zal vertrekken, maar om 20:45 uur. De tweede vertraging. Ik heb dan een hoop extra tijd over op het vliegveld en loop naar buiten en zit daar een tijdje. Dan ga ik alle winkels af, maar vind niets wat ik nog nodig heb, dus ik ga door de douane en zit daar te wachten. Hier zie ik dat de vertrektijd is gewijzigd in 21:00 uur, de derde vertraging. Dit houdt ook in dat mijn aankomsttijd in Brussel gewijzigd is. In plaats van 09:20 uur zal ik nu om 12:50 uur aankomen. Er is in ieder geval nog wat goeds hieraan. Mijn vrouw en dochter kunnen wat langer uitslapen. Ikzelf ga nu wat eten en wachten op het vliegtuig.

Aan al mijn volgers hartelijk dank voor het lezen van mijn berichten. Ik hoop dat jullie binnenkort weer wat van mij lezen, want dat betekent dat ik weer op vakantie ga.

Goodbye Miami

On my way to Miami

Let me first start by stating, that I will post this in Dutch and English in the same post. First in English and the Dutch translation below. Laat ik eerst beginnen te vermelden dat ik de posts in het Engels en Nederlands zal plaatsen in hetzelfde bericht. Eerst in het Engels en de Nederlandse vertaling eronder.

Today the trip has begun. It started yesterday with a small trip to Belgium where we stayed at a hotel nearby the airport. We stayed at the Ibis Budget hotel about 10 minutes from the airport. A decent, clean and modern hotel. After we spent the night, we went to the airport. I first checked in the luggage and then we went for a breakfast bite. After that it was time to say goodbye to my loved ones. From this point on, I am on my way alone and my dear girls have to live without me for the next two weeks.

The flight took off a bit late. Before boarding a couple of passengers were requested to come forward for an additional security check. Due to this we took off a bit later than planned. The flight itself went smooth. No major turbulences. We all got an iPad with movies and some series and games on it as this plane does not have built in screens in the headrest. The food was excellent for aircraft food. We had champagne, salad with couscous and wasabi mayonnaise, beef with green cabbage and mashed potato as main course and for dessert pear with lemon creme, hazelnut and white chocolate.

A while later during the trip we got another meal which consisted of sour cream with apple, cinnamon and almonds. With that a pancake with grapes, pineapple and some cookies.

At around 4:20 PM we landed at Miami airport. After a long walk we had to self service ourselves before heading to customs. From there we were directed to picking up our luggage and then leave customs and walk towards the Miami Mover in order to pick up the rental car. At around 6 PM I arrived at the car. It was already dark outside and I started driving towards my dinner spot for today, Shorty’s.

At Shorty’s I took the combo of brisket and white chicken. Taste was good, but to my taste both were a bit overcooked. The restaurant was crowded and people were standing in line before they could enter as all seats were taken. A very good place to eat. After that I continued my journey toward the hotel, the Best Western in Hallandale. I’m quickly finishing this post off before heading to bed. Tomorrow I will be going to the Dolphins Stadium for an American Football match after which I will drive to Titusville. A long day ahead.

Vandaag is de reis begonnen. Het begon gisteren met een korte trip naar België waar we verbleven in een hotel vlakbij het vliegveld. We sliepen in het Ibis Budget hotel ongeveer 10 minuten van het vliegveld. Een prima schoon modern hotel. Nadat we daar de nacht verbracht hadden gingen we naar het vliegveld. Ik heb eerst de bagage ingecheckt en daarna zijn we op zoek gegaan naar wat ontbijt. Na het ontbijt was het tijd om afscheid te nemen van mijn schatten. Vanaf dit moment ben ik op weg in mijn eentje en moeten mijn twee lieve meiden het zonder mij doen de aankomende twee weken.

De vlucht vertrok iets later. Voordat we mochten boarden werden een aantal passagiers naar voren geroepen voor een aanvullende security check. Hierdoor vertrokken we later dan gepland. De vlucht zelf verliep vlekkeloos. We kregen een iPad met films, series en spellen erop aangezien het vliegtuig geen schermen in de hoofdsteunen heeft. Het eten was voor vliegtuigvoedsel prima. We kregen champagne, salade met couscous en wasabi mayonaise, vlees met groene kool en aardappelpuree als hoofdgerecht en als toetje peer met citroen creme, hazelnoot en witte chocola.

Een tijd later tijdens de vlucht kregen we nog een maal die bestond uit zure room met appel, kaneel en amandelen. Daarbij pannenkoek met druif en ananas en wat koekjes.

Rond 16:20 zijn we geland op Miami Airport. Na een lange wandeling moesten we onzelf “registreren” voordat we door de douane gingen en door naar de bagageband en vervolgens de douane en we uiteindelijk met de Miami Mover naar de huurauto konden gaan. Rond 18:00 uur ben ik bij de auto aangekomen. Het was ondertussen al donker buiten en ik ben op weg gegaan naar mijn eerste dinner plek, Shorty’s.

Bij Shorty’s heb ik een combo genomen van brisket en wit kippenvlees. Het eten was goed, maar naar mijn mening een beetje te lang gegaard. Het restaurant was vol en mensen moesten buiten in de rij wachten voordat ze een plaats konden bemachtigen. Een prima plek om te eten. Na het eten vervolgde ik mijn reis richting het hotel, Best Western in Hallandale. Ik maak nog snel dit bericht af, voordat ik ga slapen. Moren ga ik naar het Dolphins Stadion voor een Amerikaanse Football (rugby) wedstrijd om vervolgens door te rijden naar Titusville. Een lange dag te gaan.
