Double Day

Today a double post, as we headed back to Orlando from Tampa and did not have internet in our hotel room the first day.

But let me start with day 8 of our trip. We had to check out from our hotel room in Tampa. It’s a great hotel, very close to the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where we had a great time at the Katy Perry concert. Today we woke up in time to check out and ate breakfast in the hotel at The Bar. After breakfast, we put all our belongings in the car and drove off.

On our way from Tampa to Orlando, we stopped at Dinosaur World. We have been here before a couple of years ago, but Xandrine likes it a lot and would like to visit it again. Since it is on our way from Tampa to Orlando, we do not have to drive a lot for it. This would be a good opportunity to visit the park again and check out what has changed. So instead of following the I4, we took a different road to the park and when we arrived, it was hot, over 100 Fahrenheit.

We took the chilly pad with us and needed it today. In the park most of the dinosaurs are the same as on our last visit. What has changed is, that there are more activities than the last time. There is still the fossil dig, but new to us was the dino gem excavation. We also got the chance to view a show about the excavation this time. Last time it was not there as I can remember that they were rebuilding the structure.

So we did the whole tour this time again. Saw hundreds of dinosaurs and Xandrine did both the fossil dig and the dino gem excavation. Besides that she also played at the boneyard, where kids can play in a sandbox excavating a dinosaur. The show was also very entertaining and learning experience. Very well done. After a couple of hours, we had seen everything and it was time for us to move further east towards Orlando.

Between Plant City, where Dinosaur World is located, and Orlando, where our hotel is located, is a place called Clermont. We have stayed in Clermont several times in the past, in a rental home. This time we visited Uncle Kenny’s BBQ restaurant, down by the Clermont Citrus Tower, for dinner. We have had BBQ here before and that was very good, so why not support the locals and do it again. Xandrine’s choice was not very BBQ. She had chicken tenders with fries, but she ate them with BBQ sauce, so a bit BBQ is in there. I took the pulled pork egg rolls and a meat combo of ribs and brisket. And they were very very good again.

After dinner we moved to Orlando and got at the hotel late that evening. We spent some time watching television before going to sleep.

The next morning, we both slept until after 10AM. We stayed at our hotel room the morning watching Food Channel. After that we went out for some shopping. We first stopped at Publix and bought a few things, but saw the whole store. Still amazing how big the stores are and what can be bought. After that we went to the shopping mall around the corner and before going shopping, we ate a bite at food court. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon and part of the evening at the Orlando Premium Outlets before leaving the mall for dinner. Today’s choice was made by Xandrine and we ate at Golden Corral. It’s packed in there and even when we left, after 10PM, there were still people coming in. From the Golden Corral we stopped at Walgreens for some afterbite as we were bitten by some insects a couple of days ago and those bites itch. Then around the corner of Walgreens, we were back at the hotel, where we quickly got ready for bed.

We are going on a summer holiday

It’s official. We are going to Florida this summer. At least, Xandrine and I are going for a “short” trip of two weeks.

Through ArkeFly the flight has been booked. On the 24th of June we will be leaving Schiphol Airport Amsterdam to fly to Sanford International Airport. It’s going to be an early flight, as we expect to lift of at 8 AM. A lot of hours later, at 12:55 PM local time, we will be touching ground in Florida and on the 8th of July we will be leaving Florida again to fly back to The Netherlands, where we expect to land at 8:15 AM on my birthday, the 9th of July.

As soon as we have picked up our luggage and went through customs, we will pick up our rental car at Alamo, which we booked through Alamo in the UK, which had the best price offer and insurance.

From there we will travel to the first hotel, which all have been booked either through Priceline or Hotwire. Our first hotel will be in Orlando the first couple of days. From the 24th of June until the 28th of June, we will be staying at the Rosen Centre Hotel on International Drive. On the 28th of June we will move to Tampa for a couple of days, where we will be staying at the Westin Tampa Harbour Island hotel, close to the Tampa Bay Times Forum. After that, we will be travelling back to Orlando on the 1st of July to remain the rest of our stay at the Hilton Grand Vacations on International Drive, just around the corner of the Premium Outlet Mall.

During our stay we will be going to SeaWorld, Aquatica, Adventure Island and Busch Gardens. Also on the planning will be Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World. Not entirely sure whether that will be on Independence Day, the 4th of July or a day before, since it will be loaded (not crowded but loaded, packed). However, Independence Day in Magic Kingdom will be an experience we will never forget.

For Xandrine I also have a surprise, which I will not mention before it has actually passed. Otherwise it will no longer be a surprise of course. This will also keep my viewers a bit curious about what is going to happen.

During the next few weeks I will need to be arranging the seats in our flights and see where we want to go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For sure, we will be visiting some BBQ restaurants. Uncle Kenny’s can expect our visit in Clermont and Swamp Boys can expect us to pick up some of their famous sauces. Since our last hotel is close to the Premium Outlet Mall, we will be visiting that mall to see if we can score some new clothes.

Vandaag hebben we maar één ding op ons programma. NASCAR Championship Weekend, Ford Eco Boost 400 Finale in Homestead. Florida City ligt niet ver van Homestead af en we zullen dan ook binnen een half uurtje bij Homestead kunnen zijn.

Voordat we naar Homestead rijden, halen we eerst een fatsoenlijke beker koffie bij Starbucks. Daarna ontbijten we bij het hotel. Eenvoudig, maar ruim voldoende ontbijt wat bij de prijs inbegrepen zit. Daarna pakken we onze spullen bijeen en gaan we op pad. We slapen vannacht niet in dit hotel, dus alles gaat weer mee. Na een korte rit zijn we vlakbij de Miami Speedway, maar door niet goed de bordjes gevolgd te hebben, rijden we een extra ronde en zijn we er iets later.

Als we de auto geparkeerd hebben lopen we tussen een hoop (vooral veel grote) auto’s door. Hier en daar staan BBQ’s opgesteld. Sommigen hebben hun hele buitenkeuken meegenomen en staan hier een heel weekend. Een hele belevenis. Yes. Alles kan en alles mag groter. We halen onze passen op bij de Will Call Window en proberen nog wat dollars uit de portable ATM te halen. Als we alles compleet hebben, lopen we nog een stukje over een soort van boulevard van merchandise. Elke coureur heeft hier wel een stand waar ze spullen verkopen. Je kunt het bijna niet zo gek verzinnen of het is er wel te koop (of het is al uitverkocht).
Daarna vervolgen we onze weg en gaan het terrein op. Aangezien we niet zo heel lang meer hebben om de pitstraat te bezoeken, gaan we dat als eerste doen. We lopen onder het circuit door en komen zo bij de pitstraat uit. Hier staan alle pithokjes, waar de karretjes met gereedschap en wielen klaarstaan. Even verderop staan alle race-auto’s naast mekaar opgesteld. Het is er lekker druk. We lopen rustig langs alle auto’s en komen dan uit op de racebaan zelf. Xandrine zet nog even haar handtekening op de muur en we kijken nog wat rond, voordat we weer teruglopen om onze plekken op de tribune op te gaan zoeken.

Onderweg naar onze tribuneplekken, stoppen we nog bij de Coca Cola Fan Zone om wat te eten en te drinken. Bij de ingang krijgen we allen een roze kaartje met een nummer erop. Hiermee doen we mee aan een verloting. Wat dat in houdt weten we nog niet, maar komen we uiteindelijk vanzelf achter, als blijkt dat we met een van onze nummers een groot bord hebben gewonnen van een coureur. Uiteraard met Coca Cola reclame. Aangezien het wat onhandig is om zo’n bord mee te nemen naar Nederland hebben we het kunnen ruilen voor een Coca Cola Spandoek met daarop een aantal coureurs. Buikjes zijn weer gevuld en we gaan door naar de tribune.

Als we op onze plekken zitten gaat het ook bijna beginnen. Eerst worden er veteranen herdacht, wordt het nationale volkslied gezongen en komen er vliegtuigen overvliegen en rijdt men met een gigantische vlag over de baan, voordat de wedstrijd daadwerkelijk van start kan gaan. Het is erg leuk om mee te maken en we hebben ook zeker genoten. Het weer was prachtig en hebben het erg getroffen. Echter vinden we dat we na zo’n 120-130 rondjes het wel gezien hebben. We lopen langzaam aan weer richting uitgang, waar Xandrine nog een aantal keren op de foto gaat met een Police Motor en Police Car.

We lopen weer tussen de grote auto’s en BBQ’s en Outdoor Kitchens heen terug naar de auto en rijden vervolgens binnen een uurtje naar ons volgende hotel op Key Largo, het Key Largo Resort. Een prachtig resort direct aan het water. Daar zie ik op de TV, dat Jimmy Johnson kampioen geworden is, en dat we een explosie van een auto gemist hebben. We gaan nog wat eten in het restaurant, wat niet zo geweldig was, en gaan rusten. Morgen een trip naar Key West.
