Goodbye Miami

Today an end comes to my 2 weeks trip through Florida. I will be going home this evening.There is nothing left but a little drive from the hotel, through Miami to Miami International Airport and from there take the plane to Brussels where my loved ones will be picking me up to go home. Vandaag komt een eind aan mijn 2 weken durende rit door Florida. Er rest niets meer dan een kleine rit vanaf het hotel, door Miami naar Miami International Airport en van daaruit een vliegtuig te nemen naar Brussel, waar mijn lieverds mij ophalen om naar huis te gaan.

It has been a great vacation and I will certainly come back again. I have travelled a lot and have seen a lot. I have met great people during this vacation and have seen many things I have never seen before, and some I have seen before.

Today I left the hotel late, as I have to be at the airport around 3 PM for check in. Since there is nothing left on my schedule and I do not want to be late at the airport I decide to take a trip through Ocean Drive before going to the airport. I slowly drive towards Miami Beach, as there has been an accident and this delays traffic a lot.

I drive over Ocean Drive northbound and from there take a so called scenic route towards Miami International Airport. On my way I see a lot of nice buildings, but also see a lot of empty abandoned buildings. I have seen a lot of good things during my stay in Florida but in Miami I have also seen a lot of poverty and Miami is also the only place during my stay where I have seen many homeless people.

When I arrive at the Rental Return at the airport it is close to 2 PM, so I am early. I leave the car at Alamo. I have travelled 1698 miles these 13 days. I have made no additional costs and will only be charged for those days. From there I take the monorail to the airport and look for the place to leave my luggage. At the Jetairfly counter it says that check-in will start at 2:40 PM, but it actually starts a bit after 3 PM.

The first delay. Then when I have checked in my luggage I get to hear that the flight has been delayed and will not depart at 6 PM, but at 8:45 PM. The second delay. I then have a lot of extra time to spend so I walk outside and sit there for a while. Then I check out all the shops, but do not find anything I need, so go through customs and sit and wait. Here I see that the departure time has changed to 9 PM, the third delay. This also means that the expected arrival time at Brussels has changed. Instead of arriving at 9:20 AM I will probably be there at 12:50 PM. At least there is some good news here. My wife and daughter get to sleep a bit longer. I myself will now go and grab a bite to eat and wait for the plane to arrive.

Het was een geweldige vakantie en ik zal zeker terugkomen. Ik heb veel gereisd en veel gezien. Ik heb leuke mensen ontmoet tijdens deze vakantie en heb veel dingen gezien die ik niet eerder gezien heb, en een paar die ik wel eerder gezien heb.

Vandaag vertrek ik laat uit het hotel, omdat ik rond 15:00 uur op het vliegveld moet zijn voor het inchecken. Aangezien er niets meer op mijn programma staat en ik niet te laat op het vliegveld wil komen, besluit ik om een rit over Ocean Drive te nemen voordat ik naar het vliegveld ga. Ik rij langzaam richting Miami Beach, omdat er een ongeluk is en dit het verkeer vertraagt. 

Ik rij over Ocean Drive naar het noorden en van daaruit rij ik een zogenoemde toeristische route  naar Miami International Airport. Onderweg zie ik een hoop mooie gebouwen, maar ook een hoop lege verlaten gebouwen. Ik heb een hoop goede dingen gezien tijdens mijn verblijf in Florida, maar ik Miami heb ik ook veel armoede gezien en tevens heb ik alleen in Miami zoveel thuisloze mensen gezien.

Als ik bij de Rental Return aankom bij het vliegveld is het rond 14:00 uur, dus ik ben vroeg. Ik laat de auto achter bij Alamo. Ik heb 2733 km gereden in 13 dagen. Ik heb geen extra kosten en er worden alleen 13 dagen huur in rekening gebracht. Van daaruit neem ik de monorail naar het vliegveld en zoek voor de plek waar ik mijn bagage kan achterlaten. Bij de Jetairfly counter staat dat ze om 14:40 uur beginnen met inchecken, maar het begint iets later dan 15:00 uur.

De eerste vertraging. Als ik dan mijn bagage ingechecked heb, krijg ik te horen dat de vlucht vertraagd is en dat hij niet om 18:00 uur zal vertrekken, maar om 20:45 uur. De tweede vertraging. Ik heb dan een hoop extra tijd over op het vliegveld en loop naar buiten en zit daar een tijdje. Dan ga ik alle winkels af, maar vind niets wat ik nog nodig heb, dus ik ga door de douane en zit daar te wachten. Hier zie ik dat de vertrektijd is gewijzigd in 21:00 uur, de derde vertraging. Dit houdt ook in dat mijn aankomsttijd in Brussel gewijzigd is. In plaats van 09:20 uur zal ik nu om 12:50 uur aankomen. Er is in ieder geval nog wat goeds hieraan. Mijn vrouw en dochter kunnen wat langer uitslapen. Ikzelf ga nu wat eten en wachten op het vliegtuig.

Aan al mijn volgers hartelijk dank voor het lezen van mijn berichten. Ik hoop dat jullie binnenkort weer wat van mij lezen, want dat betekent dat ik weer op vakantie ga.

Miami Sightseeing

Today my last full day in Miami. Tomorrow I will be flying home. According the time schedule I will leave Miami at 6 PM. So tomorrow I still have a little bit of time on my hand. No plans. Today I went driving around and went sightseeing around Miami Beach. Vandaag mijn laatste volle dag in Miami. Morgen vlieg ik naar huis. Volgens het tijdschema vertrek ik om 18:00 uur uit Miami. Ik heb morgen dus nog wat tijd. Geen plannen. Vandaag ben ik wezen rondrijden en sightseeing rond Miami Beach.

Before driving around, I walked from my hotel to Nutreat, which is not far from the hotel, for breakfast/brunch. Nutreat serves healthy meals for a reasonable price. I had a bit spicy meal, called the Tex-Mex Wedge. It’s not that spicy, it just has a little kick. With that I had the house salad with a balsamic dressing. It all tasted good. After my brunch I walked a bit around the hotel area and looked at the tall buildings.

Then I went back to the hotel and picked up my rental car to drive around a bit. I first went to a gas station to fill up the tank. Tomorrow just before turing in the car I need to refill it, to make sure I do not get a bill afterwards, as Alamo charges almost $5 per gallon. The current price in Miami is between $2.50 and $2.90 per gallon. I end up filling up the tank in a place where they hardly speak any english and where they only accept cash.

After that I drive around and slowly head towards Miami Beach. It’s almost 4 PM when I arrive at Miami Beach and park the car in the public parking area where you pay by plate. This means that you have to fill in your license plate in the machine and then pay for the time you think you will be staying there. Good to know, that you can refill later, if you decide to stay longer.

I park between 8 St. and 9 St. on Washington Ave. I walk over to 11 St. to get an early dinner at the 11 St. Diner. This is a famous place, where people like Will Smith have been and recorded parts of a video. I get inside and order a steak, my first and last stake this vacation. I have mostly been eating bbq this vacation. With the steak I have mashed potatoes and vegetables. After my dinner, I take a dessert, just because it looked appetising on the menu. It’s a Mexican Sundae. Looks like taco with sugar, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. With that ice cream with nuts, caramel and jalapeno peppers I think. A strange combination, but it tasted good.

After my dinner, I walk a bit around Washington Ave, Ocean Drive and Collins Ave. Around 6PM I head over to the Art Deco Welcome Center across 10 St. on Ocean Drive. From there I will take a 90 minute walking tour around the area about the Art Deco district and MiMo (Miami Modern). The guide explains a lot about the area and about the different styles being used and preserved. We get to see a couple of buildings and get information on those buildings.

One of the buildings, not being Art Deco, is the so calles Versace Mansion, where Versace used to live (and was shot). New buildings that are being built are not supposed to be built in Art Deco style, but are to be built in a modern style, which will complement with the existing Art Deco and MiMo style buildings. The Art Deco style buildings that are being sold and re-used can carry a new name, but the old name has to remain on the building.

The tour ends in the Wolfsonian FIU museum. This museum should already have been closed, but as the doors are still open, we are allowed to go inside and we do get to see and hear a bit more about the history of the museum and the artefacts in the museum. Then we say goodbye to our guide and go our own ways again. I walk a bit on Washington Ave until I reach the Love Hate Tattoo shop. This shop is featured in Miami Ink. Most of the “famous” artists are not there, except Yoji. He is laying on the couch.

I check out the store. They cannot convince me to get a tattoo and after having seen the store I leave again and walk back on Washington Ave until 5 St. From there I walk over to Ocean Drive and take a walk up until 8 St. where I head back to Washington Ave to get the car. With the car I drive back to the hotel.

Tomorrow I will be taking my things to the airport and head back home. It was a fun vacation, but next time, I’d rather go with my family.

Voordat ik rond ga rijden, loop ik vanuit het hotel naar Nutreat, wat niet ver van het hotel zit voor ontbijt/brunch. Nutreat heeft gezonde voeding voor een redelijke prijs. Ik had een pittige maaltijd, de Tex-Mex genaamd. Het is niet erg pittig, het heeft een kleine kick. Daarbij had ik de huis salade met een balsamico dressing. Het smaakte beide goed. Na mijn brunch loop ik wat rond in de buurt van het hotel en bekijk de grote gebouwen.

Dan ga ik terug naar het hotel en haal de huurauto op om wat rond te rijden. Eerst ga ik naar een tankstation om vol te tanken. Morgen zal ik nog een keer moeten tanken om te voorkomen dat ik een rekening krijg van Alamo. Alamo rekent bijna $5 per gallon terwijl de prijs in Miami nu ongeveer ligt tussen de $2.50 en $2.90 per gallon. Ik tank ergens in een buurt waar ze nauwelijks Engels spreken en waar ze alleen contant accepteren.

Daarna rijd ik wat in de rondte en ga langzaam aan richting Miami Beach. Het is bijna 16:00 uur als ik in Miami Beach aankom en ik parkeer de auto in een openbare parkeerplaats waar je betaald op basis van je kentekenplaat. Dit betekent dat je op de parkeermeter je kenteken invoert en daarna betaalt voor de tijd die je denkt nodig te hebben. Goed om te weten is dat je achteraf kunt bijbetalen als je langer wilt blijven dan je aanvankelijk van plan was.

Ik parkeer tussen 8 St. en 9 St. op Washington Ave. Ik loop naar 11 St. om een vroeg diner te nemen bij 11 St. Diner. Dit is een beroemde plek, waar mensen als Will Smith zijn geweest en delen van een video hebben opgenomen. Ik ga naar binnen en bestel een steak. Mijn eerste en laatste steak van deze vakantie. Ik heb vooral bbq gegeten deze vakantie. Bij de steak neem ik aardappelpuree en groente. Na mijn diner neem ik een dessert, alleen maar omdat het er lekker uitziet op de kaart. Het is een Mexicaanse Sundae. Het ziet er een beetje uit als een taco met suiker, kaneel en cayenne peper. Daarbij ijs met noten, caramel en jalapeno pepers, denk ik. Een rare combinatie, maar het smaakt goed.

Na mijn diner, loop ik wat rond op Washington Ave, Ocean Drive en Collins Ave. Rond 18:00 uur ga ik naar het Art Deco Welcome Center tegenover 10 St. op Ocean Drive. Van daaruit ga ik een 90 minuten durende wandelroute nemen in het Art Deco District en MiMo (Miami Modern). De gids legt een hoop uit over het gebied en over de verschillende stijlen die er gebruikt zijn en behouden zijn. We krijgen een aantal gebouwen te zien en informatie over die gebouwen te horen.

Een van die gebouwen, niet in Art Deco stijl, is de Versace Mansion, waar Versace gewoond en vermoord is. Nieuwe gebouwen horen niet in de Art Deco stijl gebouwd te worden, maar in een moderne stijl, maar moeten wel passen in de Art Deco en MiMo stijl. De Art Deco stijl gebouwen die verkocht worden en herbruikt, mogen wel een nieuwe naam krijgen, maar de oude naam moet op de gevel blijven.

De tour eindigt in het Wolfsonian FIU museum. Het museum had al gesloten moeten zijn, maar aangezien de deuren nog open zijn, mogen we naar binnen en krijgen we wat meer te zien en te horen over het museum en de attributen in het museum. Dan nemen we afscheid van de gids en gaan we onze eigen wegen volgen. Ik loop nog wat over Washington Ave totdat ik bij de Love Hate Tattoo shop kom. Deze shop komt voor in Miami Ink. De meeste “beroemde” artiesten zijn er niet, behalve Yoji. Hij ligt op de bank.

Ik bekijk de shop. Ze kunnen mij er niet van overtuigen een tattoo te nemen en nadat ik wat rondgekeken heb, verlaat ik de shop weer en loop weer terug op Washington Ave tot 5 St. Van daaruit loop ik naar Ocean Drive en die volg ik tot 8 St. waarna ik terug loop naar Washington Ave en de auto neem. Met de auto ga ik terug naar het hotel.

Morgen breng ik mijn spullen naar het vliegveld en ga ik terug naar huis. Het was een leuke vakantie, maar volgende keer ga ik liever met mijn familie.
